The history of the samurai sword tends to be a rather bloody history, due to the fact that they were used to carry out deadly silent attacks. The first swords were a straight double edged iron blade, a variation of the Chinese Jian, but began to slightly change into the beginning of the slightly curved katanas. By the end of the 10th century the katana had its fully, very distinguishable curved blade. The basic Japanese samurai swords include:

- Wakizashi or shoto
- tanto
It is history that only the samurai could carry these knives together. While many places offer samurai swords for sale, the most popular collection era is from the pre-1950's, and anything from 1200-1340 has been designated as a national treasure in Japan. If you choose to buy from second hand dealers and auctions, always check into the authenticity and quality of the product you are purchasing. Many items which are sold as real ninja swords or samurai swords are replicas and are not of true samurai sword quality.
The samurai sword has long been a symbol of the deadly history of Japan, and is widely recognized. The notoriety of these swords has been exponentially widened due to the impact of Hollywood films utilizing these Japanese samurai swords. Many places have samurai swords for sale, but before purchasing any of these items be aware of what you are purchasing, as some more recent models are not fit for use, only display. Japanese Samurai swords come in many different model types, not just the tradionally seen katana swords.
