KA-BAR got its name after a letter was written to the company from a fur trapper. In rough English, he described how his gun jammed and that he had to rely on his knife to kill a wounded bear that was attacking him. In thanking the company for their quality product, the fur trapper described using the knife to kill the bear. All that was legible was "k a bar". The company so honored by his testimonial that they changed their name to KA-BAR. During WWII KA-BAR knives was distributed to Marines, and became so popular it also became favored by other branches of military as well, and was durable enough to be used daily for all the tasks any enlisted man would perform, such as digging, hammering, defense, and prying.
